Engineering Presence : an Experimental Strategy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Over the centuries artists have developed a range of techniques for inducing a sense of presence in an audience. The goals of these are however essentially open-ended. The presence engineer, on the other hand aims to use presence for practical applications. After summarizing ways in which presence can be detected and measured this paper places 21 century presence techniques and technologies in the broader context of previous techniques and technologies, which have already proved their effectiveness. Presence technologies are defined as technologies allowing an actor to transmit a signal inducing a sense of presence in an audience. In engineering applications this sense of presence furthers the goals of the actor. An examination of difference techniques and technologies shows that presence can be effectively induced using signals with very low bit rates and in the absence of any form of interactivity. Animal research and literary theory is used to show that the effectiveness with which presence is induced depends on the evocation of pre-existing mental imagery in the mind of the audience. In artistic applications of presence this involves a deliberate simplification and restructuring of the physical world. The paper therefore proposes a four-stage strategy for engineering presence using modern Virtual Environments. The strategy involves simplification of the physical world so as to emphasize aspects of key importance to the engineer, decomposition of complex situations so as to identify simple situations for which the user already possesses adequate mental imagery; identification of cues capable of effectively evoking this imagery, recomposition of complex realities via the creation of sequences of cues capable of generating complex and novel mental imagery. It is argued that these techniques could have useful applications in learning, a prospect currently under exploration in the EU-funded I-learning Project.

Compensation of Voltage and Current Harmonics in Hybrid Renewable Energy System Using Coordinated Power Control of RES Inverter
In this paper, an adaptive control strategy is proposed for the inverters of renewable energy source (RES) to simultaneously control the load voltage, grid current and the amount of instantaneous injected power to the grid in the presence of grid voltage distortions and nonlinearity of load current. In the proposed control strategy, the power quality of the local load can be settled based on th...

Today, robots and unmanned aerial vehicles are being used extensively in modern societies. Due to a wide range of applications, it has attracted much attention among scientists over the past decades. This paper deals with the problem of the stability of a four-rotor flying robot called quadrotor, which is an under-actuated system, in the presence of operator or sensor failures. The dynamica...
متن کاملA New Adaptive Load-Shedding and Restoration Strategy for Autonomous Operation of Microgrids: A Real-Time Study
Islanding operation is one of the main features of a MicroGrid (MG), which is realized regarding the presence of distributed energy resources (DERs). However, in order to deal with the control challenges, which an MG faces during island operation, particularly when the transition is associated with certain excessive load, an efficient control strategy is required. This paper introduces a Centra...

متن کاملEnergy Efficiency Analyses of Toolpaths in a Pocket Milling Process
This paper presents an approach to analytically determine the most energy efficient toolpath strategy in mechanical machining. This was achieved by evaluating the electrical energy requirement of the NC codes generated for the zag, zigzag, and rectangular contour toolpath strategies. The analytical method was validated by performing pocket milling on AISI 1018 steel with the considered toolpath...
